F2PMeter: Is Firefall truly Free-to-play?

Our F2PMeter is back. In this episode we'll put Firefall's free-to-play-ness to the test, a well-known shooter MMO that features fast paced battles, different warframes/classes to level up indipendently, an open world to explore with vehicles and gliders, and environments designed to add a vertical dimension to fights and exploration. And if you are interested, remember to check out our review of the game.

Will it be truly free-to-play? Let's sort it out.

Firefall - news

Remember that games start with a 100% of free-to-play-ness, and that percentage will vary depending on the answers to our questions.

EN - Question 1

No. Anyone can create an account and play for free. However, there are different starter packs available to purchase, which give you stuff (depending on which pack you choose to buy) that will help you to begin your adventure, such as vehicles, VIP membership days, premium currency, all battleframes unlocked and downloadable soundtrack and concept art booklet.

EN - Question 2

Yes (optional) – -15%. You can buy a VIP membership that will give you access to boosts to XP/Currency/Reputation gain, additional manufacturing and market slots and an exclusive glided pad.

EN - Question 3

No. Until now every update has been free to play for everyone, and for now there is no reason to think that things will change.

EN - Question 4

Yes – -5%. You can purchase premium items through premium currency, from cosmetic stuff to battleframes, vehichles, boosters, token (a sort of treasure chest with random items), and a lot more.

EN - Question 5

No. Yu can unlock the advanced battleframes right on the spot with one click, but they can also be unlocked through regular gameplay, so it's more of a time-saver than a direct advantage.

EN - Question 6

No. There aren't UI customization options available for purchase.

EN - Question 7

Yes. There aren't races in Firefall, only Battleframes, that work like classes, and players will have access to all the basic battleframes for free. You can unlock the advanced ones either progressing through gameplay or unlocking them through premium currency.

EN - Question 8

No (but...) – -5%. Every player can access the marketplace and use it for free, but is it possible to unlock more slots through VIP membership.

EN - Question 9

Yes. – -10%.You can buy more inventory space through premium currency.

EN - Question 10

Yes. For what we've seen and read, there aren't restricted areas to players.

EN - Question 11

No. All content seems to be accessible to everyone for free.

EN - Question 12

Yes – +10%. Despite the chance to unlock the advanced battleframes through premium currency, we think that the game is still enjoyable for free with a little more effort, being the stuff available in the store mainly cosmetic items and time savers.
