Best Free to Play Mac MMO Games
When we think of F2P games then first and foremost we typically look at the PC/Windows as the main platform, hardly surprising given the lack of division that the likes of console players find and so providing your rig is up to par PC gamers on the whole can play pretty much every F2P game. However, whilst not quite as lacking as the console F2P games the number of F2P titles on the Mac are limited, understandable as most players wouldn’t buy a Mac to play games and so the power/viability of the machines to play modern games varies from user to user (where some top end Macs are equally as powerful as a lot of PCs these days). So to tip our hat to the inferior Mac owners, ever under the heel of the PC master race, we’ve put together a list of some of the best F2P Mac games out there.
Marvel Heroes 2015
The superhero franchise is still growing stronger and stronger and Marvel seems to be an unstoppable juggernaut (see what we did there) with more movies and tv shows constantly coming out, it’s all just new content. The game itself is an Action RPG where players can literally step into the shoes of some of Marvels most loved characters, both heroes and a few villains that have seen the error of their ways. With predominantly PVE focused content players can take on a variety of missions, explore dangerous and familiar locales with dynamic instanced locations that change with each play. The hero characters themselves all have their own unique abilities and play style but can be further customized with talent builds and gear to make them viable team mates or solo fighters.
War Thunder
An exciting and beautifully designed WW2 shooter the game plays more like a simulator with it’s amazing graphics and realistic physics, players are able to command their own armored vehicle or soar through the skies with hundreds of different vehicles to choose from. With it’s realistic physics comes an exceptionally detailed damage system where individual vehicle components take damage that can be enough to hinder, disable and completely destroy a vehicle such as a mid-air collision sheering off a planes’ wing and sending it spiralling to the ground. The PvP really shines and the tech tree for the various planes throws out a lot of exciting playstyles sure to suit everyone, whether piloting fighters or slow moving bombers or giving your air comrades support from your panzers down on the ground.
Lord of the Rings Online
An oldie but a goodie, Lord of the Rings Online is the epic MMORPG fantasy set in JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth that sees players rise as budding adventurers as those that we have read in the books or seen in the movies. With various classic races and plenty of classes to choose from, the game boasts a “choose your own package” style free to play setup where players can pick and choose the elements of the game they are interested in. Everything from extra classes, races and even Adventure Packs that will send them off on new and dangerous journeys to face some of the most notable and challenging threats from the franchise. With PVE being strong and in-depth story driven quests, then does have some elements of PVP where to represent the battle of the Kingdom of Men against the dark agents of Sauron players can fight as alternate characters as either a human or one of the many beasts and monstrosities that plague the land.
Star Conflict
A fast paced dynamic space shooter that puts players in the cockpit of their own spaceship as they fight among the stars in huge fleet battles in a battle against empires and money hungry mercenaries. With numerous ships to take control of players can explore the stars in search of danger and the rewards that come with them, with dozens of space locations and PVE missions as well as a unique sandbox PVP and PVE mode. Players can choose to fly as a lone wolf, group up with other spacers or join the Corporations War where they can form their own alliance and battle for control over territory and rise as notable and legendary pilots.
Wakfu
This exciting turn based MMORPG is a follow up of the Dofus, set 1000 years after the events of it’s predecessor, the game is extremely popular in France where it has its own cartoon, comic, trading card game and board game. With elements of tactical RPGs the game is an intriguing mix of various genres and playstyles, offering players traditional MMORPG questing as well as more social elements such as organizing armed militias, running player elections for governor positions, running a farm and harvesting crops. There are sixteen classes in the game but unlike many games players get access to all their primary abilities from level one and as they progress will be able to modify them and make them more powerful.
Albion Online
Albion Online is a fantasy RPG style MMO whose core feature is a pure player driven economy, from the resources gathered and items crafted, players can go a step further by establishing entire player run towns and cities. Furthermore in this classless game where your equipment determines your role, players can band together and fight to destroy said cities, plunder them for resources, or take over them completely. Whether you want to be a farmer, a builder or an adventurer the world is yours in Albion Online and is a true cross-platform game with Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android all able to play on one primary server.
RuneScape
The oldest title in our list, at least its first incarnation, this MMORPG fantasy is a medieval classic with open sandbox gameplay where players can find their own adventures. The game is a browser based MMORPG (hence it being available to play on Mac, that still counts right?!) and offers a vast MMO world to explore filled with challenges. With 26 skills players can choose to focus their game time on fighting both monsters and bad guys, other players in PVP areas, or working on their crafting skills buying and selling resources and items to other players. How players choose to customize their character and their abilities is entirely up to them, removing the more familiar class based gameplay this means players can essentially make their own characters and skill templates as best suit their needs.
Star Trek Online
Never has the journey to seek out new life and new civilizations been so fun as in Star Trek Online, quite a few years under its belt this exciting MMORPG sees players rising through the ranks as the captain of their own ship from one of the many different factions and races from the shows and movies. With extensive class and role options players can customize their ship and their crew as they fly through the final frontier or beam down to planets and control their own humanoid character as they boldly go where no man has gone before. The balance of crafting, PVP and PVE is extremely strong and the game offers an amazing feature known as the Foundry where players can create their own instanced based environments using hundreds of items and enemies and powerful tools to create their own mini-dungeons and quests.
Dungeons and Dragons Online
The classic fantasy MMORPG based off the hugely popular tabletop roleplaying game; Dungeons & Dragons Online is yet another story-driven epic where players are the protagonists of their own huge story-arc that will send them across the campaign setting of Eberron and beyond. With powerful classes both magic and steel will clash in amazing battles and players will go up against some of the greatest and most terrifying enemies seen in any MMORPG. For those who enjoy the classic RPG element or are fans of the tabletop adventure, Dungeons & Dragons Online is an excellent take on the genre and provides hundreds of hours of content and fun as either a solo adventurer or joining up with other companions.
