BUILDINGS

Players are given more than 30 unique buildings to shape and strengthen their holdings as they see fit. Divided into two categories, Economy and Military, each building is rendered in gorgeous 2D detail, and each offers specific advantages to the player, depending on his desire to develop either a strong economic power, or to amass an unstoppable army. Over time, at predetermined levels of development, each building and the city as a whole change appearance to reflect the player's Empire growth.

Building construction involves the collection of necessary building materials and, in some cases, the research of prerequisite technologies. Most buildings have multiple levels available, with each upgrade intensifying the building's effect or unlocking new options for the player.

Among these buildings we can find:

Palace – The royal residence where the players can find their Emperor and all of his heirs and descendants. Also, from time to time aristocrats will arise from the ranks of the Empire's people and will ask to join the imperial court. Each of the noblemen in the Palace comes with their unique combination of civic and military skills, that will determine if they're best suited to be appointed as either Governors (boosting a province's resource production or army training) or Generals (enhancing the player's army performance and survivability in offense and defense).

Fortress – A province's chief defensive structure. Its toughness and garrison capabilities grow up with each upgrade, and its level also determines the resource storage threshold of the province. Each Fortress can additionally be furnished with great number of fortifications, such as a moat, multiple towers, and curtain walls.

Marketplace – A place for the player to buy and sell resources. The economy is player-driven, so prices and availability heavily depends all the players within a given realm. For example, to sell a resource, the player must publish an offer, and set the price per unit he's looking for; the closer that value to the current trading cost of the resource being sold – the sooner their offer will be picked up by another player.

Depot Station – As an Empire's resources are being produced locally in each province, this building is crucial for transporting goods from their point of origin to the location where they're most needed currently. For example, a Military Post that a player has established on the global map has no production capabilities of its own, so raw materials for all buildings and upgrades within will have to be transferred from elsewhere.

COMPLEX BATTLES

With over a dozen battle units at their disposal, players will have plenty of opportunities when it comes to dishing out punishment to the enemy. While most of the units exhibit a familiar rock-paper-scissor dynamic, many of them also have special abilities that, when used properly, may very well end up turning the tide of battle. Furthermore, once researched, additional battle formations become available to the player, although, to use those to their full advantage, successful reconnaissance is also required, as it is better to take into account not only one's own forces, but also the opponent's army composition.

Morale is a key concept in battles, as the longer a battle draws, the lower your troops spirit drops, and once it gets low enough – they will just run away from the battle (and possibly suffer heavy casualties from the pursuing enemy). This becomes especially important during a town siege where, if not backed by sufficient siege engines, even a superior army may be routed before the walls are breached.

ALLIANCES

All players can join an existing Alliance or form one of their own, and invite their friends in it. Being part of an alliance comes with multiple benefits that make this a preferable option to braving the game's challenges on one's own. First of all, Alliances have several unique Officer positions, each of them granting particular benefits. The Construction Officer, for example, has an increased construction speed for all of his buildings, while the Science Officer has the research time decreased for all technologies. It should be noted, most of the Officer bonuses depend on the player’s Loyalty stat which stimulates team-play and attention to one's Alliance performance. Another huge benefit is the opportunity for allies to combine their armed forces (at special Alliance-built holdings – Rally Points), and thus send them to conquer a foe that no allied player could take on alone. Players can also pool their resources into the Alliance Treasury. While this is a one-way transaction and all donations are non-refundable, the Treasury's contents can be spend on Alliance structures and researches, which benefit all members.

Finally, membership in Alliance allows you to participate in Alliance War – a limited-time event, in which both sided fight for supremacy and to accrue precious Military points. When the event time expires, the winner is not only elevated in the Ranking, but is also granted the gold value of the enemy units destroyed.

LORDS OF THE REALM

At the end of an Era, within each Realm the 'Lords of the Realm' event is initiated. This is the time where all Alliances engage in a completion for supremacy. There are 9 neutral Castles spread throughout each world map, and conquering one of them increases the owning Alliance's influence throughout the realm. Furthermore, if one more of the Alliance members' Empires fall within the Castle's circle of influence, they receive substantial boosts to their production rates and morale, while any enemies caught within that radius suffer penalties. When the event finally ends, the members of the Alliance with the most influence are declared victors of the Era, and are all awarded the “Lord of the Realms” title.
