F2PMeter: Is Pirate Storm Truly Free to play?

We’re taking a look at Pirate Storm for our next demonstration of our patent-pending F2PMeter, the greatest technological breakthrough of our time that will take a game, ask a series of questions, and then give a score as to how free it really is.

Pirate Storm is a browser-based developed by Bigpoint in which players get to explore the world from the deck of their pirate ship, go island hopping in search of lost treasures, do battle on the high seas with challenging AI opponents and players alike, and see if they have what it take to be the most feared swashbuckler that lived.

The game has three subscription packages (Bronze, Silver and Gold). Though they are not a requirement they do give added perks and boosts such as faster repairs, free seals, XP boosters, extra ammo, and much more.

'Yes' (but…) -5%

The game doesn’t have any classes, players control their own pirate ship which come in five primary varieties, three of which are purchased with gold and the two biggest and best ships being acquired by spending Diamonds. Diamonds CAN be acquired in game through completing quests, however, it requires a lot of dedication and time to farm enough Diamonds to buy the largest ships.

'No'

The limitations in place for the Auction House are level restrictions (level 10) and not due to free to play accounts.

'No'

Players can hold as much cash as they like, the storage they have is based primarily on the size of their ship. Whilst the larger ships do require Diamond currency, the Storage feature itself hasn’t been handpicked as a feature to restrict to F2P accounts and is more a by-product of the ship size/storage stats, which makes sense.

Are all dungeons and zones accessible without purchases?

'Yes'

There are no restricted areas for f2p accounts.

Does the game restrict high endgame content (PVE, Raids or PvP)?

'No'

End game PVE and PVPE is available to all players and account types.

Can the game be fully enjoyed without ever having to spend a ‘penny’?

'Yes' +10%

In the competitive arena we would say that Pirate Storm most definitely has a “pay to win” philosophy, with many of the community members taking this as being the norm and perfectly acceptable. The ability to quick repair, buy better ammo, improved ships and more means that those PVPing competitively have a greater advantage. That said, there’s plenty of the game that can be enjoyed if you don’t mind feeling behind the power curve.
